Definition: an institutional repository (IR) is an online archive for collecting, preserving, and disseminating digital copies of the intellectual output of an institution, particularly a research institution.
Explanation: the content of an institutional repository consists mostly of electronic publications (articles, papers, dissertations, etc.). In case the repository consists mainly of research data sets, the preferred term is data repository.
